Absolute Triathlon Club was formed by BTF Level 3 and full time Triathlon Coach Steve Lloyd in April 2009. Steve had been involved in Triathlon for a number of years working for himself as a professional Triathlon coach as well as being employed by the British Triathlon Federation. When Steve and his family moved to Nottingham in 2008 Steve felt that there was no provision in the area for a triathlon club that catered for juniors and so the first seeds were planted about creating a brand new club in Nottingham.
The club began as a community project to provide opportunities in triathlon to local children and would be ran by a volunteer committee who would receive no financial remuneration. The club is therefore ‘owned’ by its members who are able to vote at the annual general meeting.
With the help of Nottingham City Council Steve secured a Community Sports Fund grant of £1500 to launch the club helping to pay for facilities and other costs such as marketing and coach education. It was during the early part of 2009 that interest started to grow about the club providing adult sessions so it was decided that the Thursday evening swim session would be for adults as well as juniors (who were to also have a specific session on a Sunday).
The club grew quickly and with the adult sessions developing at a fast rate additional swim sessions were included on Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s as well as run & bike sessions.
Steve always had a very strong ethos that the club should be self-sustaining and not rely on grant funding, and within the first 6 months of launching the club reached this goal with swim sessions breaking even and income generated from membership fees.
The club remains a volunteer organisation ran on a ‘not-for-profit’ or more accurately ‘non-profit-distributing’; this does not mean that the club cannot generate revenue from sessions and memberships it simply means that we do not / cannot distribute any of the clubs surplus income (profit) to the committee or members and any money is ploughed back in to the club.
Fast forward to the present and the club continues to grow and thrive with several sessions across the week and a pioneering junior club.
The club is always looking for new blood to join the committee or undertake coaching qualifications, if you are enthusiastic and would like to be involved in the continued development of a dynamic and active club we would love to hear from you!
